The Granary Island

Fascinating history

Granary Island became an island in the 16th century, when the New Motława canal was dug to improve the city’s defenses and facilitate the transport of goods. For centuries, it served as the economic heart of the city—by the 17th century, it was home to around three hundred granaries storing vast quantities of Polish grain and other valuable commodities.
For safety reasons and to prevent fires, strict regulations prohibited permanent residence and the use of open flames on the island after dark.
The historic development came to an end in March 1945, when nearly all the granaries were destroyed during wartime operations.
After decades of neglect, the island has undergone a spectacular revitalization in recent years, regaining its former splendor as a modern hub of hotels, restaurants, and apartments inspired by its historic architecture.
